The City of Kamloops has adopted a new age structure to try to provide cheaper access for younger kids at pools and other city-run rec facilities.
The changes, introduce a new “preschool” admission fee for drop in swimming and public skating.
Recreation Supervisor Linda Stride says it means more children will qualify under the pre-school and child rates.
“Under the new structure, children two and under are free, and then now we have a pre-school rate from three to six and then the child rate doesn’t start until age 7.”
Stride says this move is ultimately going to save families money.
“For kids who are 4 to 6 years old, they were the ones paying a child rate previously, so those kids now will be paying a pre-school rate.”
She estimates families will save roughly 50 per cent on their costs with the new structure.
“For pre-schoolers, aged 3 to 6 at Westsyde Pool would pay a drop in fee of $1.97 and then at the Canada Games Pool it would be $2.29. The pre-school rate equivalent to about 50 per cent less than the previous child rate.”
Under the old rules, kids 3 and under were free, with a fee rate set for kids aged 4 to 13.
The changes took into effect on May 4, 2023.
