If you’re looking for a place to gather during the Memorial Cup, the Kamloops Legion on Lansdowne Street will be opening its doors.
President Daniel Martin says there will be beer for sale and hockey on TV for people who don’t have tickets to the games or those who don’t want to head to the Molson Canadian Hockey House located by Sandman Centre.
“We will also be offering lunch,” Martin said. “During the weekend, we’ll be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. because the games are earlier. On the weekdays, we’ll be serving a late lunch between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.. We’ll also be holding our normal meat draws during the Saturdays and Sundays.”
Martin says the Kamloops Legion will also have other activities and giveaways during the Memorial Cup week.
“It’ll be a great week for us to be open and supporting of course our Blazers and the Memorial Cup,” Martin said. “We’ll like to see as many people as we can. We’re open to everybody. It’d be great if the population comes down and supports the Legion.”
The Memorial Cup trophy was established by Captain James T. Sutherland to honour those who died in service during World War I. The trophy – which was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March 1919 – was re-dedicated to the memory of all fallen Canadian Military Personnel in 2010.
Martin also says people can also join the Kamloops Legion as members, noting you don’t have to be a veteran to sign up.
“We will have a tent at the arena and we’ll be talking to people about Memberships and what the Legion does,” he said. “So come down and say hi, and come have a chat with us at the arena. We’ll be there every single day.”
