Kamloops RCMP say there will be extra police patrols over the next ten days as Memorial Cup tournament action gets underway tonight.
Spokesperson Corporal Crystal Evelyn says while Kamloops is no stranger to hosting large events, she is urging people to be careful.
“I mean we are the Tournament Capital for a reason right? And Kamloops RCMP detachment is no stranger to these large events either,” Evelyn said, on The NL Noon Report.
“This is an exciting event. Lots of people are expected to be in the city for the weekend and throughout the duration of the games and with that, you’ll see those extra patrols.”
Evelyn says most the focus will be in the downtown core, where the majority of Memorial Cup activities are set to be held.
“We’ll be doing what we always do and that’s providing and maintaining core policing the same way that we do all the time,” Evelyn said. “The difference being here is that we are expected to have an influx of visitors to the town and with more people, you’ll see more police officers as well.
“And again, that is to provide and maintain those core policing objectives for safety and security of everybody involved. Enforcement of things like liquor laws and public safety, criminal code investigations and regular policing stuff that comes with having an increased community.”
“We are hoping that everybody is respectful to each other and to this city and that includes people who live here and people who are visiting so that we can have a safe and fun event.”
