UPDATE 4:15 p.m. – Kamloops Fire and Rescue says a grassfire that broke out on the Tk’emlúps reserve is under control.
Deputy Chief Ryan Cail says the fire began just before the noon hour near Halston Avenue and Kootenay Way in the Mount Paul Industrial Park.
“Reports came into dispatch of a grassfire quickly moving,” Cail told RadioNL.
“The original location was behind the Halston Esso. Crews got on scene and reported a fire moving quite quick in some grass which got close to two structures, but I’m happy to report no damage to any of the structures.”
Speaking on NL Newsday from the scene, Cail also noted the BC Wildfire Service also sent a crew to the scene
“We were also working closely with TteS. They had some water tenders to support the operations. We had a number of our apparatus for a couple of hours working the fire,” he said.

At one point, there were 28 Kamloops firefighters on scene, though a number have since cleared the scene.
“It is not out by any means,” Cail said. “There are still some hot spots and that is what we are doing right now. We reinforce the guard. We wet-line the exterior perimeter of the fire, and any hotspots we action with BC wildfire and ourselves.”
Cail says it is not clear how the fire started, noting fire investigation will be heading to the scene to try and figure that out.
