While Flair Airlines isn’t ruling out adding new routes to Kamloops, don’t expect it do so in the near future.
Vice-President of network planning, Eric Tanner, says his main focus is sustaining the new Kamloops to Edmonton flight that is set to take off on June 18.
“We certainly are always analyzing new route opportunities from across the country,” Tanner said.
“I think right now our focus is just about making sure that we ramp up this Edmonton service, both for this summer but then also investing depth into the schedule going forward. You know, can we get this up to a daily service etc.?”
Tanner said he plans to “certainly” talk to Ratuski and Tourism Kamloops about future opportunities in Kamloops.
“We’ll always be analyzing the service as it goes. There are also people who take the flights and then come back and tell their friends, and all of a sudden you have this ripple effect of building demand not through low fares. You’re just building it based on awareness,” he said. “Part of why we’re here is just to spread the word.”
“What makes airlines so hard, but makes airlines so fun is that there is any number of ways for a route to work. There’s also any number of ways for it not to work.”
The Alberta capital is one of three key destinations being targeted for direct air service to Kamloops, with Victoria and Toronto the other two.
“Because we now formally have the population base to support more destinations, we are now actively talking with existing and new potential carriers for other opportunities to serve Kamloops,” Airport Manager Ed Ratuski told NL News in June last year.
“Edmonton is a market that we are hoping to get back in service. As well, the demand to Victoria is recovering very well, and Toronto as well.”
Benjamin Ryan, Chief Commercial Officer for Air North also told RadioNL that regular flights to Kamloops are “definitely on the radar.”
