June 21 marks National Indigenous People’s Day across Canada.
Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc is celebrating the day through a variety of activities, live entertainment, and traditional drumming and music.
Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir says it will take place at the Tk’emlúps Powwow Arbour from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
“We have a lot of amazing things happening at the Arbour and it will all start at 3 pm and what I can say (National Indigenous Peoples Day) is about honouring and recognizing the accomplishments and the achievements of our people,” said Casimir.
“But it is also about our people just getting together and inviting everyone to come and join us and just have a wonderful day, building relationships and having some fun and spending some good quality time together in the great outdoors.”
Registration for the Moccasin Mile Run will start at 2 p.m. with runners set to head out at 4 p.m.
Vendors and the Kidz Zone, which will include face painting, bouncy castles, and arts and crafts, will run from 3 until 6:15 p.m.
Opening remarks for National Indigenous Peoples Day at Tk’emlúps will take place at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Sage Hill Drummers taking the stage from 5:00 until 5:30 pm
The Margit Sky Project, which is a diverse group of musicians, will perform songs with a strong power of emotion from 5:45 until 6:15 p.m.
The evening will come to a close with a performance from George Leach, who is a Juno award-winning artist from the Sta’atl’imx Nation.
Casimir says the event will be free for everyone to attend and celebrate together.
