Kamloops RCMP are asking for your help in locating someone who may have set off a brush fire in the city’s West End on Sunday afternoon.
Mounties say they were called to help Kamloops Fire and Rescue put out a fire in the 300-block of St. Paul Street West, around 5 p.m. on August 6. The blaze was on the hillside not far from where another large fire – believed to be caused by a campfire – broke out in April.
“Thankfully, the fire was quickly extinguished preventing damage to any nearby businesses,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said. “This is however very concerning given the very dry conditions throughout the entire region.”
Mounties say they’re looking for a white man in his 50’s, who was wearing sweat pants and carrying a backpack at the time.
Sunday’s brush fire comes on the heels of the City of Kamloops shutting down all the nature parks and trails within city limits on Friday due to the extreme fire danger rating.
Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc saying at the time that the closures – which are not unprecedented – were being made in the interest of public safety.
Editors note – This story was updated to reflect the correct location of the fire. RCMP said they were called to the 300 block of St. Paul Street, though it was on the hillside between the 300 blocks of Victoria Street West and St. Paul Street West, where the fire broke out.
