The Kamloops Rotary Food Drive is taking place next weekend with a big change coming down the line.
Kamloops Food Bank Executive Director Bernadette Siracky says they have officially transitioned to paper bags, noting it’ll be the first year without the notable plastic yellow bags.
“They are going to be delivered directly to your mailbox. They are paper bags, it is the first time, no more plastic – look for them and please fill them.”
She says this as the need for food donations has been growing substantially in Kamloops.
“People are struggling in a very powerful way right now, we are seeing that lineup every single day. How do you keep up with every bill in your life increasing?”
Pointing to foot traffic in September specifically, Siracky says it’s been “breathtakingly busy.”
“We have not had a moment without a client in that waiting room, it has been packed from the doors opening to the doors closing, so we are seeing an increase in need.”
The Rotary Food Drive paper bags will arrive in people’s mailboxes ahead of the food drive, with Siracky reminding people to place it on their doorstep before 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 23 to be picked up.
