It is another easing of fire bans in the Kamloops Fire Centre as the BC Wildfire Service says Category 2 fires will be permitted as of noon today, Oct. 6.
People will also be able to use fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, and burn barrels or burn cages at this time.
This move comes a little over a week after the campfire ban was lifted. That happened on Sept. 28, with decreased temperatures and higher relative humidity in the area.
A Category 2 fire is any material in one pile that does not exceed two metres in height and three metres in width. It also refers to material concurrently in two piles each not exceeding two metres in height and three metres in width as well as stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 hectares.
Anything larger than that is considered to be a Category 3 open fire, which will be off limits until next Friday, Oct. 13.
“These prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre jurisdiction, unless specified otherwise in an enactment (e.g., in a local government bylaw),” the BC Wildfire Service said.
“Always check with local government authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in effect.”
People who are found in violation of these restrictions may be issued a ticket for $1,150, while being required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000. If convicted in court, they could be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.
