Kamloops RCMP say a man was taken to Royal Inland Hospital for assessment and care after he experienced a mental health crisis on the Overlanders Bridge on Sunday evening.
The bridge was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic in both directions as emergency personnel responded to the area.
“While frontline officers attempted to deescalate the situation, a number of RCMP support units, including the Southeast District Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service Unit, were deployed to the area,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said.
“The Kamloops Fire and Rescue Service was also positioned under the bridge.”
The closure led to long delays on the Halston Bridge as people were forced to reroute for about 90 minutes Sunday.
Evelyn says the man was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act around 6 p.m., and taken to hospital.
