Operation Red Nose is looking for volunteers in Kamloops ahead of its annual safe ride home service which launches next weekend.
The charity ride service – which is into its 27th year – will operate every Friday and Saturday from Nov. 24 until New Year’s Eve, giving people another way to get home safely during the holidays.
The service is by donation and open to anyone with all proceeds going to PacificSport Interior BC.
Coordinator Elsa Poppleton is encouraging people to sign up in groups of three for shifts that range from four to six hours.
“So one of them is driving the team around to the pickup location, while the other two are getting in and out of that vehicle into the client vehicle and driving that client home,” Poppleton said. “They then get back into the vehicle and their head to their next destination to do a pick up and drop off over again.”
Poppleton told Radio NL the goal is to get as many volunteers as possible this year.
“The more the merrier, so essentially the more teams we have on the road, the more rides we can provide and the less our wait times are,” she said. “On some nights sometimes it can kind of incur just based on the number of calls we’re getting and the sheer number of teams we have on the road.”
“There are a wide range of volunteer positions available, whether you want to be on the road, or in the office. Driving a client vehicle, or driving your personal vehicle or sort of being a safety buddy to the individual driving that client vehicle.”
Interested volunteers can find details or register online here.
People hoping to schedule a ride are being told to contact 250-372-5110 while the service is operational.
