It will cost more to dispose of waste at Eco Depots, Landfills, and Transfer stations for people in the Thompson Nicola Regional District in the new year.
Starting January 1st, several waste streams in the TNRD will see changes to its tipping fees, a decision supported by the TNRD board of directors at a meeting last week.
Under the changes, garbage, noxious weeds, small dead animals, and commercial recycling will increase from $80 per tonne to $90 per tonne at eco-depots as well as a rise from $10 per cubic metre to $11 at Transfer stations.
However, TNRD Solid Waste and Recycling Manager Adrianna Mailloux says they are leaving the dollar per bag in place for household garbage.
“It is $1 for a standard bag of household garbage. Once your load is — over 50 kilograms or over four bags of garbage — we switch to using the weight-based charge.”
On top of that, Mailloux says there will be a larger impact on tipping fees for renovation, demolition, and construction materials.
That group will go from $160 per tonne up to $250, as of January 1.
“The big ones that end up in this waste stream are dimensional lumber, asphalt shingles, and concrete and asphalt material; these products can all be separated for a lower disposal fee, so that is how you will save money, is by actually diverting those.”
Fees to dispose of concrete and asphalt will also increase, from $20 to $30 per tonne; while materials containing asbestos will rise from $230 to $300 per tonne.
Mailloux says the reason for the increases is to incentivize people to separate the items they are bringing in for waste.
“By increasing the cost, the goal is that it would push that material that can be diverted in that waste stream, to actually be diverted and decreasing the amount of material that is going into landfill.”
Additionally, Mailloux says the increase in tipping fees to these streams will better reflect the current costs of disposal for many materials, which have risen over the past several years.
