Kamloops RCMP say a man and a woman are in custody after a large police presence on McGill Road in the Sahali-area this afternoon, Dec. 18.
Police say they responded to reports of a stolen truck that was being driven “dangerously” from Vernon towards Kamloops, just before 2 p.m.
Spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says the vehicle was found on fire at Sahali Mall this afternoon shortly after it entered Kamloops, and just before two suspects – who are known to police – were arrested.
“An elementary school in the area [Beattie Elementary] was placed in a brief hold and secure as a suspect attempted to flee from officers, only to be caught by the Police Dog Service Unit,” Evelyn said.
“Thanks to the quick response and teamwork of multiple police units, which included RCMP Air Services, North Okanagan RCMP, and Kamloops Detachment frontline officers, Targeted Enforcement Unit, and PDS, the police presence was swift and effective.”
It is not clear who the two people were, or how the vehicle caught fire.
Mounties say people who witnessed the incident or those with video of it should contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-44277.
