Tourism Kamloops is applying for provincial funding to explore the viability of building an “iconic structure in and around Kamloops.”
It is not clear what kind of iconic structure Tourism Kamloops has in mind, but it lists the Sea-to-Sky Gondola in Squamish, the Malahat SkyWalk near Victoria, and the Golden Skybridge in Golden as examples.
“The acquisition of an iconic structure in Kamloops stands to enhance the city’s competitiveness in comparison to emerging attractions in areas like Vernon and Revelstoke,” Lisa Strachan, Tourism Kamloops’ Director of Destination Development said, in a letter to City Council.
“By aligning with Destination BC’s Rainforest to Rockies promoted ‘iconic’ route, Kamloops could attract external investments, thereby benefiting both residents and tourists alike.”
In the letter, which is going before City Council on Tuesday, Strachan is asking the City to support the application for grant money from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ESTI-BC), saying it will help facilitate a comprehensive feasibility study.
“In the event of securing this grant, Tourism Kamloops plans to engage with key interest holders such as the City of Kamloops, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, TNRD, Venture Kamloops, and private landowners to deliberate on a suitable location within the Kamloops area,” Strachan said.
“The feasibility study would consider existing plans, community consultation, and ongoing operational requirements of whatever proposal potentially emerges.”
