Edmonton Oil Kings netminder Kolby Hay has been named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2024.
The Monte Creek native posted a 1-0-0-1 record against two of the hottest teams in the WHL last week. He faced at least 30 shots in both games, and came away with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.
Hay turned aside 28 of 30 shots on Friday against the Prince Albert Raiders to help the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 3-2 overtime win. Hay did not allow a power play goal on the night and was named second star at the Art Hauser Centre.
He faced an even tougher task on Saturday against the league-leading Saskatoon Blades, a game the Oil Kings lost 2-1 in overtime.
The 19-year-old did not allow a single goal on Saskatoon’s five powerplays in regulation, though any hopes of a second consecutive overtime upset were foiled by Brandon Lisowsky, who scored the game winning goal on a penalty shot.
Hay though was named second star once again with a 32-save effort on 34 shots.
Hay sports a career-best 19-17-1-1 record with one shutout, a 3.85 goals-against average and .887 save percentage in his second season as the starter for the rebuilding Oil Kings.
He was the back up to Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa when Edmonton won the WHL title in the 2021-22 season.
