The daughter of Claire Newman is adding her voice to a plea from Valemount RCMP as they continue to try and solve the hit and run death of the former Merritt City Councillor.
Mounties say there have been “exhaustive efforts” made since the crash on July 4 of last year, but they note that the vehicle that hit Newman along Highway 16 near the Lucerne Campground just west of the B.C. – Alberta border remains unidentified.
Investigators had said they believed that Newman was outside her vehicle when she was struck by a passing Jeep sometime between 11:45 p.m. on July 4, and midnight on July 5. The also said the headlight assembly that belonged to a 2016 to 2018 grey Jeep Cherokee was spotted at the crash scene.
But in an update Monday, Mounties say while there have been “exhaustive efforts” made over the past year, they have not been able to identify the vehicle that hit Newman.
In a video statement released by the Mounties, Claire’s daughter Lauren urged people with information to come forward, saying the family has been though a number of challenges over the past year.
“We have had her service in September of 2023,” she said. “Lots of people came and said beautiful things and were very honouring of her, but I would say not having my mother to talk to and be there to give me that advice really is a hard thing to deal with and shouldn’t have been this way that she passed.”
In the video, Lauren also urged the person who was behind wheel of the vehicle that hit her month to come forward and do the right thing.
“Car accidents happen all the time. Cancers happen all the time. You name it, it happens all the time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do the right thing and come forward and give people the closure they need,” she said.
Mounties say they’re committed to solving this case, and are asking people with information to reach out to the Valemount RCMP at 250-566-4466 or to Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
