B.C.’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change says an investigation is underway after 8,000 litres of diesel was spilled after a tanker truck crashed on Highway 5 north of Rayleigh late Saturday night.
In a statement to Radio NL, a Ministry spokesperson said that the diesel was spilled on the road and the adjacent railway line.
“At this time, we believe most of the spill went into a ditch and no waterways were impacted,” the statement said.
“The responsible party has activated an emergency response plan, and a qualified professional was on site to remediate the spill and take samples.”
Traffic was impacted for close to a day, as crews responded to the crash between Old Hwy 5 and Palmer-Forsyth Road, near the Tournament Capital Ranch. The highway was closed in both directions from around 11 p.m. Saturday night until about 7 p.m. Sunday evening, with two-lanes of traffic flowing as of around 10 p.m. Sunday.
“The impacted tanker was removed once all the diesel fuel was recovered,” the Ministry statement added. “A Provincial Environmental Emergency Response Officer was on scene to assess the situation and monitor clean up.”
RCMP said Sunday that no injuries were reported after the single-vehicle crash, though a cause for the crash has not yet been made public.
“Our portion of the investigation is still ongoing,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn told Radio NL Monday. She said representatives from Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) were also on scene Sunday.
People with information or video of the crash are being told to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.
