Kamloops RCMP has issued a public warning as investigators look into two disturbing incidents that may involve vulnerable women being targeted for sexual assault.
The RCMP’s Sex Crimes Unit, along with the General Investigation Support Team, launched investigations in early July after receiving two third-party reports. The reports suggest that women who lead more vulnerable lifestyles may have been victimized.
“In both cases, police are actively working to gather further evidence to advance the investigations and identify the person responsible,” said Cpl. Dana Napier, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. “As the investigation progresses, police are concerned that other individuals may have had negative experiences with the perpetrator, or may have been victimized, but have not yet come forward.”
The RCMP has recently expanded its dedicated Sex Crimes Unit, which uses a trauma-informed approach to investigating sexual offences and connecting victims with support services.
“In both these instances, women who tend to lead more vulnerable lifestyles appear to have been the intended targets of these attacks,” said Cpl. Joe Bayda, non-commissioned officer in charge of the General Investigation Support Team. “We are committed to ensuring their safety and encouraging others who may have been affected to come forward.”
Police are urging anyone who has experienced sexual violence or who may have information related to the ongoing investigations to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.
Support is also available through the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre’s 24/7 crisis line at 1-888-974-7278.
