The community is rallying behind a grieving family after a tragic head-on collision on the Coquihalla Highway claimed the life of Maduni Chathurda, a young mother and wife. The fatal crash occurred Friday night near the Inks Lake turnoff, just south of Kamloops, involving a grey Dodge Ram pickup driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes and a white Hyundai Kona carrying Ms. Chathurda and others.
Two women in the smaller vehicle died in the crash, while three others suffered serious injuries. The incident has left a family shattered, particularly Maduni’s husband and their seven-year-old child. In the wake of the tragedy, he has started a GoFundMe campaign seeking financial support to cope with the sudden loss and the challenges ahead.
“My wife, Maduni, passed away yesterday while coming to Kamloops on Highway 5,” the husband wrote. “I am shocked by this unexpected tragic incident. I have a seven-year-old child and am in a helpless state. I badly need some money to face the oncoming circumstances. Kindly request your support in this most needy situation. Thank you and highly appreciate it.”
Authorities continue their investigation into the crash, which is believed to have been caused by impaired driving. Corporal Michael McLaughlin of the BC Highway Patrol confirmed the ongoing inquiry during a media briefing.
“At this time, we are confirming this is a suspected impaired driving investigation,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “The vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes was a Dodge Ram pickup. Tragically, two women lost their lives in the Hyundai Kona hatchback after the head-on collision.”
McLaughlin emphasized the seriousness of the incident and the importance of gathering more evidence. “We are looking for witnesses who saw the driver of the pickup in the hours leading up to the crash, as well as any dash-cam footage,” he said. “Every detail helps us understand how this tragedy unfolded and ensures justice is served.”
Traffic along the Coquihalla was severely affected, with delays lasting into the early morning as emergency crews worked at the scene.
The family’s GoFundMe page has quickly gained attention as community members express their condolences and offer support. The loss of Maduni Chathurda has become a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from impaired driving.
