Residents in and around Merritt may notice smoke in the coming months as the BC Wildfire Service begins a series of controlled burns northwest of the city.
Starting as early as Monday, November 3, 2025, BC Wildfire Service crews will be conducting a fuel management project near Lindley Creek Road, roughly five kilometres from Merritt. The work, which will continue periodically until March 31, 2026, involves burning about 50 piles of wood debris.
The project is being carried out in partnership with the Cascades Natural Resource District as part of ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire risk in the region. By burning accumulated forest fuels such as dead branches and woody debris, officials hope to decrease the potential intensity of future wildfires.
Smoke from the burns may be visible from Merritt, the Lower Nicola Indian Band, and nearby communities. Drivers along Highways 5, 8, and 97C may also see or smell smoke at times.
BC Wildfire Service says all burning will only take place under favourable conditions, with trained personnel on site to prepare, control, and monitor the piles throughout the operation.
Residents are reminded not to report this planned activity as a wildfire. However, anyone who spots an unattended campfire, open burning violation, or suspected wildfire can call 1-800-663-5555, *5555 on a cell phone, or use the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
