Motorists in Kamloops’ Aberdeen neighbourhood have been facing delays over the past several weeks as BC Hydro continues extensive electrical infrastructure upgrades at the intersection of Pacific Way and Hugh Allan Drive.
The project, which began October 1, involves underground work to improve the city’s power reliability. Throughout October, rotating lane closures were in effect to allow heavy machinery and crews to safely access the site.
BC Hydro says it worked to notify the public ahead of the project, distributing pamphlets to businesses within a three-block radius and running daily public service announcements on local radio stations.
Still, the work has led to some frustration among drivers. On social media, several residents have commented on the congestion in the area, with one Facebook user writing, “There’s a big traffic jam up on Pacific Way to turn towards Costco… cars are just everywhere. Would be worth skipping the whole area if possible.”
Another commenter added, “It’s awful — I feel bad for people who live that way. What a mess. A lot of people were turning around and speeding away out of frustration.”
BC Hydro says after November 11, 2025, traffic disruptions at the intersection of Pacific Way and Hugh Allan drive are expected to be significantly reduced. All work at the intersection is expected to wrap up by the end of the month. We want to thank the travelling public for their patience while this important work is being completed.
While acknowledging the inconvenience, BC Hydro says the upgrades will help prevent power outages and improve long-term service reliability in Kamloops.
“This work is a great example of how our crews are working to ensure our electrical infrastructure is properly maintained, tested, and upgraded so we can continue to provide safe, reliable energy to the residents of Kamloops,” the company said in a statement.
