The Kamloops Broncos hope a new coach and a new philosophy can turn the ailing football program around.
Jay Daniels has been hired to take on the task of Head Coach. He replaces Braden Vankoughnett who let the Broncos seek a potential new coach while he contemplated his options after last season.
“I just can’t wait for April and the summer to begin… eager to get after it,” said Daniels in an interview with Radio NL Sports today.
Daniels brings 20 plus years of coaching and developing football at the grassroots level on Vancouver Island, mostly in Comox Valley.
Daniels has a few non-negotiables and coaching philosophies he hopes to bring to Kamloops for a team that finished 0-10 last season in the BC Junior Football Conference.
“Skill over scheme, firm but fair, and character above all. You want to provide these athletes with the best possible training so they can move their career forward. It’s also about being accountable and adaptable and setting standards,” continued Daniels.
He hopes to retain members of the current coaching staff and wants to reach out to Vankoughnett in the future.
The Broncos have made the playoffs since 2015
“There’s no magic formula here. It’s about doing the hard work and injecting the new energy and excitement. We need to focus on the players, the club and the community and building this back from the ground up.”
Daniels also wants to create pathways for local players to move onto junior football in Kamloops. He tells NL Sports that’s basically what he’s been doing on the Island as he tries to grow the game.
In a press release, the organization stated “Jay represents exactly what we believe in as a club. His experience, leadership philosophy, and commitment to culture and community align perfectly with the direction we want to take Broncos football.”
Daniels plans to head to Kamloops to start laying the groundwork in the coming weeks in preparation for the annual spring camp.
