A day-and-a-half before the WHL trade deadline, the management of the Kamloops Blazers have something else to factor into their calculations moving forward: The return of Blazer Defenseman Harrison Brunicke.
“Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Harrison Brunicke has been assigned to the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, it was announced today by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas,” stated the Penguins organization on their website Wednesday morning.
The move does not come as a huge surprise, as the Penguins had sent him down to the AHL for a “conditioning stint,” rather than dress him for his 10th NHL game, which would have started payments on his entry-level contract.
With the Penguins also competing for a playoff spot at the moment in an extremely tight Eastern Conference, a willingness to carry a relatively untested 19-year old on their blueline became less and less likely.
Brunicke did average nearly 16 minutes a game while up with the Penguins, scoring his first NHL goal during his 9 game stretch.
He comes back to a Kamloops team currently sitting 4th in the WHL Western Conference, and to a team which will also be getting back some key assets soon in the form of injured forwards Jordan Keller and Vit Zahejsky.
Brunicke recently represented Team Canada at the 2026 World Junior Championship where he registered two assists and was plus-2 in seven games, helping Canada to a bronze medal.
