The Thompson-Nicola Film Commission, in partnership with the Kamloops Film Society, is bringing back its annual Learn About Film (LAF) seminar with a two-day program at the Paramount Theatre on March 7 and 8. The event is designed to provide emerging and mid-career filmmakers with practical skills, industry insight, and networking opportunities.
LAF will feature hands-on workshops and presentations from Canadian film professionals, including writers, directors, producers, and story editors. Topics covered will include screenwriting, story development, crowdfunding, navigating the film industry, and composing music for film and television.
Film Commissioner Terri Hadwin, said the event is intended for filmmakers at all stages of their careers. “Even if someone has never dabbed a toe in the film industry, there’s something here for them,” she said. “Even highly experienced professionals can take away new insights.”
Hadwin noted that LAF has steadily grown since its inception, particularly through its partnership with the Kamloops Film Society and alignment with the society’s annual film festival. “Last year, we had about 50 attendees from across the province,” she said. “We heard from many participants that attending LAF inspired them to pursue film school or advance their projects. It’s about creating opportunities in our own community so people don’t have to leave the region to gain these experiences.”
Tickets are available for either a single day or the full two-day program, priced at $35 and $50, respectively, which covers lunch and all seminar activities. The event is intended to be accessible and affordable, offering participants a chance to engage with industry professionals and like-minded peers without leaving Kamloops.
“Learn About Film is one of the ways we help our region’s storytellers build the skills and relationships they need to succeed,” Hadwin said. “We’re committed not only to attracting productions to the area, but also to supporting the filmmakers who live and create here. This event is an investment in the people who make our creative community vibrant and resilient.”
