The Mayor of Kamloops has now confirmed that the political battles he’s been fighting against fellow councillors and others since taking office may end up costing him the property which galvanized his desire to get into local politics in the first place.
Reid Hamer-Jackson telling Radio NL that his bank has launched foreclosure proceedings against the property he owns at 260 Victoria Street West — his Tru Market Auto site.
“I’ve had a hard time making my payments,” admitted Hamer-Jackson. “I mean, just look at my car lot. I mean, how do you make money there? So I haven’t made my payments and things like that.”
The Mayor has not disclosed how much he is in arrears on his property, but suggests his financial woes stem directly from the money he’s personally dolled out through is time in office to defend and advance legal challenges against him.
This includes the numerous code-of-conduct complaints filed against him by other members of city council.
Hamer-Jackson — though not obligated to do so — would retain legal council to defend himself against each of the complaints in which he would offer a response.
Many of those complaints were filed against him by Councillor Dale Bass, whom he blames for putting him underwater when it comes to paying down his debts connected to 260 Victoria Street West.
“She needs to be held accountable,” argued Hamer-Jackson. “Our code-of-conduct bylaw has everything right in there. If there’s frivolous, filed with bad faith code-of-conduct complaints, she should be held accountable.” I think she should really step up to the plate. She says she owes her previous council members. While now she owes the City. Maybe go down to City Hall today and take a cheque for $500-thousand dollars to reduce our budget.”
It’s now estimated the City has spent over half-a-million dollars in fees to investigate code-of-conduct complaints filed during the current council’s time in office.
Revelations from a recently-released review of a complaint filed by Bass determined the Mayor violated sections of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act connected emails and text messages sent out in April and May of 2025.
The remedy for that is for the Mayor to send out three letters of apology — one to each of the staff members involved [names of whom remain publicly redacted], on top of mandatory privacy policy training.
Failure to comply will result in a combined 20% reduction of his base salary for the remainder of the Mayor’s current term in office, which will conclude in October when the next municipal election is held across BC.
Hamer-Jackson has yet to bend to any of the demands put before him by other members of council after being sanctioned in five separate code-of-conduct violations.
“I’m not going to be signing letters of apology to people that are accusing me of grabbing people’s butts, violating personal boundaries, monitoring washrooms… I’m just not going to be doing that,” Hamer-Jackson told Radio NL in response to a further question about the state of his personal finances.
“I’m not going to lose my ethics and my morals for the sake of some people that wanna tell some stories,” added Hamer-Jackson.
As of publishing on Friday, April 17th, the Tru Market Auto location at 260 Victoria Street West is still listed for sale through the Enjoy Kamloops Real Estate Group’s website.
“…[T]his premier site offers a breathtaking natural backdrop and a rare chance to create a landmark residential community with the potential to develop up to six storeys in height,” states the online listing, which has the property set for a sale price of $3,599,000. “The property benefits from a 10-year Revitalization Tax Exemption, providing significant long-term value for developers and investors alike.”
“Its strategic location ensures effortless access to local amenities, schools, shopping, and recreational facilities, further enhancing its appeal to future residents,” adds the listing.
“This property represents an outstanding investment in Kamloops’ vibrant future.”
Hamer-Jackson has said that he launched his political career to help those who he would speak to on the streets while working to try to secure his property from vandalism and damage from those associated with the various shelter and aide programs run out of locations on or near Victoria Street West and the Tru Market Auto location.
Never having attempted to run for office before that, Hamer-Jackson would strike a chord with those frustrated with street crime and public drug use brought on by changes in provincial and federal policies by running on a safer-streets campaign and winning the Kamloops Mayor’s chair on his first try in October of 2022.
