A Kamloops RCMP officer on scene at a call/via listener contribution
With spring in full swing and longer daylight hours bringing more people outdoors, the Kamloops RCMP is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert, especially in school and construction zones where pedestrian activity is increasing.
The message comes as part of a seasonal road safety push from the Kamloops RCMP Detachment Crime Prevention Unit, which says warmer weather typically leads to more cyclists, pedestrians, and neighbourhood traffic sharing local streets.
“School zones and many city construction zones are 30 km/hour,” said Sandro Piroddi, Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Kamloops RCMP. He urged drivers to “slow down, be aware of their surroundings and obey speed signs.”
The reminder is especially focused on detour routes currently in use, including a key corridor that passes through residential areas on the way to the Kamloops Airport. On Thursday, April 23, Speed Watch volunteers will be stationed in the 2200-block of Young Street to monitor driver speeds and encourage safer driving through the neighbourhood detour.
According to the RCMP, the detour area sees frequent foot and bicycle traffic, making speed compliance particularly important.
“The detour route cuts through neighbourhoods that sees lots of community activity, such as bikes and pedestrians,” Piroddi said. “We want to be a visible reminder to drivers to slow down and watch for neighbourhood activity on their way to and from the airport.”
The campaign is part of ongoing road safety efforts by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which continues to emphasize cautious driving in high-traffic community areas during seasonal transitions.
