
Emergency crews responded to a serious water rescue Sunday evening after a vehicle entered the North Thompson River in Kamloops, prompting a large-scale rescue effort and an ongoing search for a missing occupant.
The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. Firefighters from the Kamloops Fire Rescue department were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports that a vehicle had gone into the river.
Before first responders arrived, several bystanders entered the water in an attempt to assist those inside the vehicle. Officials described the actions of the civilians as courageous and praised their willingness to help during a dangerous and fast-moving situation.
Firefighters later carried out coordinated rescue operations in challenging river conditions, successfully bringing three people safely to shore. Crews worked together under rapidly evolving circumstances to complete the rescue.
Authorities say a search remains underway for one additional occupant believed to still be in the river.
