It’s the next step in the efforts by the Whispering Pines First Nation in Kamloops to try and buy into the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. The pipeline was halted by a ruling from the Federal court of Canada.
Former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Frank Iacobucci was appointed by the Federal Government to oversee the consultation process with Indigenous peoples before the federal government makes yet another a final decision.
Band Chief Mike LeBourdais has a meeting with Iacobucci next week to also talk about the previous process used for consultation and pushing two specific proposals which includes purchase.
“That will be part of the conversation is is the accommodation side,” he said. “So, there are two proposals we are going to put in front of him. One is the aboriginal resource tax or just to tax pipelines and the other is an opportunity for purchase through our equity partners.”
The consultation process is likely to take months.
