Kamloops Search and Rescue is mourning the loss of a long time member, Clive Giolma.
He passed away today after a long battle with cancer.
Giolma was with KSAR since 1999, and Search Manager Alan Hobler says he will be missed.
“He was a member on a bunch of our specialty teams, including rope rescue and the ATV teams and a couple other ones,” said Hobler. “He was one of those people who was almost always available for any call out, any time, day or night.”
Hobler adds Giolma was the AdventureSmart presenter, and he made over 6,200 presentations to kids and adults in the Kamloops area.
One of Clive’s more memorable rescues was near Sun Peaks, several years ago.
“Two subjects were pretty close to not surviving and when we were able to rescue them, they mentioned Clive by name,” added Hobler. “Specifically, quoting that Clive had visited their school and gave them survival training.”
“They remember everything he taught them, and that was what helped them survive.”
Giolma was recognized by AdventureSmart for his work earlier this year.
Hobler says never wanted the spotlight for himself, but he says they’re thinking of ways to honour the impact he had on the community.
Giolma was a retired firefighter, and in addition to KSAR, he was a member of the Kamloops Hiking Club and Kamloops Outdoor Club.
