If you are doing some home renovations in the new year, you may have to jump through some hoops to get rid of older drywall you have ripped out.
City streets and environmental services manager Glen Farrow says drywall prior to 1992 may contain asbestos, which is a health risk on more than one front.
“The risks associated with landfilling product and we are impacting our lifespan. The cost of putting in garbage today and the impact that will have in our landfill 30 years out. We are looking at other markets for these products. Even drywall and gypsum we can divert it absolutely but where are we hauling it and where are we sending it.”
Farrow says people taking drywall to city landfill sites will have to prove it is asbestos free.
The idea is not new as municipal landfills in Metro Vancouver have long required older drywall to be tested for asbestos before accepting it.
Editors Note: Angelo Iacobucci passed away December 14th. While we work through our tremendous loss he continues to be a big part of Radio NL as he always will be. We have found a folder of almost 30 stories he had prepared for the holiday season. This is one of them.
