The mayor of Sun Peaks says building employee housing is a main priority this year.
Al Raine says the municipality is looking to create a “land bank” to build new housing, “so that we have some properties we can develop, so that we can put some affordable employee programs together.”
Separate from the municipality, Sun Peaks Resort is in the process of building non-market housing which would accommodate 80 employees, and it’s expected to be done this month.
Raine says among other goals for Sun Peaks in 2019 is to get work started on the $8-million dollar Sun Peaks Centre, which the community has gotten a $6-million-dollar grant to help build it.
“Which will be an all-weather facility with a roof over the rink, so that we can do off-season events no matter what the weather is.”
He adds the municipality will also be looking to keep its property tax increase within two per cent, which makes up 40 per cent of the total property tax bill.
