Expect treacherous weather on the Coquihalla from Merritt to Hope beginning later today.
Environment Canada has a winter storm warning in place, with up to 35 centimetres of snow expected to fall beginning late this afternoon.
The forecast also says there could be freezing rain tomorrow, and forecaster Bobby Sehkon says it’s a dangerous mix.
“I would say both are quite dangerous, I mean it’s not a great time to travel if you’re planning on it tonight or tomorrow morning. But certainly with the freezing rain, it can get really slippery. That can make for some really treacherous conditions.”
Sekhon says the potential for freezing rain will be from late in the morning tomorrow into the afternoon.
He adds the Rogers Pass along Highway 1 will also see up to 50 cm of snow before the end of the day on Thursday.
A winter storm warning is also in place along the Yellowhead from Tête Jaune Cache, north of Valemount, to the Alberta Border, with at least 25 cm of snow in the forecast there from late this morning until tomorrow evening.
For the North Thompson, meanwhile, a snowfall warning is in effect, with Environment Canada forecasting that 15 to 25 cm of snow will fall by tomorrow, beginning this afternoon. That snowfall is expected to be concentrated in the Clearwater area, with less snowfall likely in Barriere and locations south of there.
