We now know some of the extent of a diesel spill near Vavenby on the weekend.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says the meat truck that crashed into the North Thompson River likely had about 350 litres of fuel in its tank.
The crash happened early Sunday morning, just south of Avola. A cause has not yet been determined, although highway cameras snowed compact snow blanketed the Yellowhead Highway in the area where the crash happened.
Meanwhile, a “Do Not Use” order on water remains in place for people in Vavenby.
“We’re currently doing water testing on the system to see if any contaminants actually got into the water system, and we’ve sent those off for results which we should be expecting either late Thursday or early Friday,” TNRD emergency information officer Debbie Sell says, while speaking on the NL Morning Show.
“And provided the results come back and show the system is clear, we will be able to get the “Do Not Use” order lifted from Interior Health, and then we will be able to let residents know that the water is now safe.”
In the meantime, Sell reminds that water in Vavenby shouldn’t be used for anything but flushing toilets.
Free water bottles is available for pickup at the Vavenby Fire Department, and residents can also use the North Thompson Sportsplex shower facilities in Clearwater, free of charge, while the “Do Not Use” order remains in place.
