After a sky high avalanche risk closed down some interior highways, Avalanche Canada says things will improve this weekend.
Avalanche Forecaster Grant Helgeson says this weekend avalanche risk will likely be considerable in the alpine and moderate below the treeline.
“As we move into the weekend the avalanche danger is going to come down. So we are going to go from that high avalanche risk and folks are going to see a bit of considerable and moderate as we move towards the weekend.”
Helgeson says people should take the avalanche risk downgrade in context.
“At times like this it is important to remain vigilant in the way that you treat the back-country and recognize that there are many slopes that are prime for avalanches.”
Helgeson says while the risk of a natural occurring slide lessens the chances of a human caused avalanche will increase.
“Well that is because the snow-pack is settling out just enough that we no longer have the natural avalanches but when we start putting the weight of a skier or a sledder especially in the steeper or more convex features we are concerned about the risk of human triggered avalanches as we move into the weekend.”
He says things will still be dangerous and people should not be in the back-country without taking an avalanche safety training course.
Helgeson also advises bringing a digital three antenna transceiver, probe, and shovel.
