The MLA for Kamloops North says his concern level is mounting after another diesel spill into the North Thompson River after a crash on the Yellowhead, the second such incident in a week and third in two years.
Peter Milobar says the minister of transportation needs to address the issue and provide some assurances for people in the North Thompson.
“I definitely feel for the people up the valley and we will continue to keep advocating for safety improvements. We have seen work around Darfield that was started by the previous government get finished off. The plan was always to keep continuing and going section by section. Unfortunately we have not heard from the minister that there is a commitment to keep doing that. It would be nice if she was able to make a comment on this situation to try and alleviate some of the concerns people in that area have.”
Milobar says safety improvements are needed on the Yellowhead.
“It depends on the stretch. There are some stretches where dividers would definitely be warranted or along the edge of the road need to be added. There are some areas where the corners need continual work and straightening out. That was what we saw happening over the last several years. Unfortunately the minister has been a bit MIA when it comes to explaining what the strategy for that corridor is moving forward.”
The Saturday crash north of Avola came six days after, and close to the scene, of another crash that resulted in Vavenby residents being issued a do not use water order.
The order was lifted on Friday the day before this latest incident.
