At least one Kamloops city councillor has already had enough of the increase in parking fees downtown.
Mike O’Reilly wants council to roll back the parking increases, which kicked in on Jan. 1 of this year.
“I’m asking for the parking rates to go back to the original fees from last year, which is $1.25 an hour. And I think that’s fair to the downtown and should be done right away.”
O’Reilly says the parking fee increase was poorly thought out and accomplishes nothing.
“I don’t believe there was data to support the increases, furthermore I don’t think what was promised with the parking meters, and with the parking increase, was not delivered.”
He notes the downtown core is the only place in Kamloops charging for curbside parking.
Parking fees increased from $1.25 to $1.50 for the first two hours of parking, and from $2.50 to $3.00 for hour three.
Does O’Reilly think the idea has support of the majority of council?
“I think it’s good for all councilors to have an open mind until it hits the council table, but I’m looking forward to having an open discussion with the new council. And that’s not to be forgotten is that we’re still going off of previous council’s decision. And we may have a new direction for what we think is important and what needs to be done.”
