Thompson Rivers University is looking to develop a piece of land it owns across the street from campus.
The school is looking to rezone a property at 1120 McGill Road to use it for new commercial and residential space.
Development services director Marvin Kwiatkowski says TRU bought the land a couple years and it’s currently zoned for light-industrial use.
“They would like to incorporate that property in with the rest of their institutional property in the future, and redevelop that site. Now it’s obviously a key site at the entrance, or the gateway, to the university.”
Kwiatkowski says a public hearing will happen before city council approves the rezoning.
“We don’t have the drawings or a plan at this point in time, so I don’t know the exact timelines on that. So at this point it’s just parking, and then as they develop a bit more of a plan and a strategy it’ll be most likely commercial on the bottom floor and then residential.”
The property in question is the former site of Bandstra Transportation Systems and Canadian Freightways.
