City staff in Kamloops are coming up with a plan to address aging infrastructure across the city.
In a report to council, staff showed a detailed report of the state of city hall as an example for assessments they will need to do on other buildings.
City Planning and procurement manager David Hallinan says city hall is 55 years old.
“At the time that it was built, Kamloops was a far smaller community than what it is. And so it was a multi-purpose facility that housed both city hall as well as I believe a jail, or a regional jail centre. And lots of times when old buildings are renovated and restored, you really start to compromise some of the integrity of the systems that are in place.”
He adds “back in the 60s building requirements were very different. And so, the building is very structurally-sound and still serving its purpose today. But as a growing city, we wanted to make certain that we get it on council’s radar that something needs to be looked at.”
Hallinan says assessing aging buildings will help predict where work will need to be done in the future.
