The mayor of Kamloops says there are lots of important details to figure out yet as Council begins to take a deep dive into the latest downtown performing arts centre concept.
Ken Christian says one of those details would be what is the city’s contribution to the proposal?
Christians notes the location is on city owned property where a parking lot replaced the old Daily News building.
Does the city then donate the land?
“That maybe what happens but the city owns a lot of property. We acquired that Glacier property when the Daily News closed down and it was an abandoned closed building that was not able to be used for other purposes. It was a bit if a tank quite frankly. We demolished it and put in surface parking and we said at the time that was not the highest and best use of that land.”
Christian says another big question is the downtown parking situation.
“It would have the same number of underground parking spots that are there but the problem is there is a parking problem in Kamloops that we have failed to study definitively. I think that Mr. Fawcett in his presentation was quite clear that there would times when that theatre would be fully used that parking would be at a premium.”
Christian says downtown parking problems at events are a common occurrence in cities around the world and people in Kamloops may need to adjust.
