The leader of the BC Liberals would like to see an inventory done on all of the wildlife across the province.
Andrew Wilkinson says there needs to be much better wildlife management, wetlands protections, and salmon conservation.
But first Wilkinson says we need to know what there is in the province to protect.
“It is a matter of starting first of all, and the wildlife issue is a great example, we have very poor information about our wildlife populations around the province,” he said. “It is very anecdotal. They are done in Victoria.”
“Funds that [are] collected from wildlife tags should be dedicated, and an equivalent amount should be put into wildlife conservation. The first thing we have to do is get a handle on the numbers.”
He says hunters, trappers, and environmentalists all agree there needs to be a proper wildlife inventory so we can manage those populations over the long run.
