The village of Ashcroft is looking to break ground on a large-scale housing project this year.
Mayor Barbara Roden says the village owns more than 20 acres in the Mesa subdivision which it is looking to develop, located on the south end of town just off Highway 97C.
Roden says the number of homes built there would depend on density, but says the project will fill a need no matter what.
“And in Ashcroft and other small communities, it’s not so much affordable housing as it is housing,” Roden said. “And the village, we finished overhauling our official community plan and zoning bylaw last October, so that’s all done brand spanking new.”
Roden says it’s been a long time since a large housing project has happened in Ashcroft.
“What we’re hoping would be a mix of houses,” Roden says. “Not just your single family, two-storey, four bedroom homes, but maybe some smaller one-storey units.”
Roden adds Ashcroft’s biggest housing concern is building more homes, as it’s more affordable than many nearby communities.
