B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office is looking for witnesses or dash cam footage of a crash last month in Kamloops between an unmarked police car and another vehicle.
IIO Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald says the crash happened in the early morning hours of December 8th.
“Shortly after midnight, so very early in the morning about 12:30 am, there was a collision between an unmarked police vehicle, which was a dark coloured sedan, and civilian, which was a dark coloured pick up. This was a situation where the police were attempting to stop this vehicle and a collision resulted. During the collision the driver of the civilian vehicle suffered serious harm. It was non-life threatening injuries but sufficient to meet our standard.”
MacDonald says his office now needs to determine if any charges are warranted to the officer involved.
“It is to determine all of the circumstances around this incident. As required by statute we investigate anytime where the actions of police have led to serious harm to any person. Our goal is to determine whether or not a police officer should face any charges as a result of our investigation. If so we would refer the matter to the crown.”
As for the delay of more than a month in appealing for witnesses MacDonald says it took some time to determine if the incident fell within his office’s mandate.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or perhaps caught it on camera is asked to call IIO’s tip line at 1-855-446-8477.
