One Kamloops city councillor is carving a path forward after two fatal hotel shootings this week.
Acting mayor Denis Walsh says police could do more beat walks and beef up their presence, and says there are measures for the public to take as well.
“People, generally, when they see something they need to start reporting it more often. And probably even look at block-watch programs, I think those are really effective for neighbourhoods to feel safer.”
He says education at schools is also important to prevent gang recruitment, and points out a police task force for student safety was created last year in the Kamloops School District.
“I think they’re already trying to get people at a younger age, educate people and just give them the information that they need to make the right decision.”
Police say the two homicides on Wednesday were targeted and were results of organized crime. Walsh says the news is unsettling, but says there’s no danger to the public.
“We’re a very safe community, we have a lot of talented RCMP members and definitely they have the resources to take care of us.”
More than 50 investigators are now working “around the clock” on the two shooting incidents as they continue to look for a suspect.
