One Kamloops councillor says more could be done to bring dollars from RVers into the city.
Bill Sarai says RVers generally have a lot of disposable income but he says the only places in Kamloops to park them are in Knutsford and Dallas.
“There’s so much opportunity there to keep them closer to the city,” he says. “They can park their RVs but still come in and spend their money in our town.
“We’re missing out on that economic generator if they’re so far out. They might do their grocery shopping at the little store there. They don’t come into town for much.”
Sarai brought the topic to Tourism Kamloops CEO Beverley Desantis at this week’s city council meeting.
“It’s interesting that you bring that up,” she says. “RVing is becoming more and more popular globally… Our European and Asian visitors are turning to RVs as a really interesting way to see Canada.”
Desantis says the organization has talked to the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc band about a partnership on the matter.
“And they seem to have a plan, and I hope that we can work with them to help them move that plan forward to bring more and more opportunity for RV traffic and campgrounds, even for our Tournament Capital sporting.”
Desantis says Kamloops could benefit more from RVers due to its location between the B.C. coast the Rockies.
Mayor Ken Christian added that the city is working with the Tk’emlups band to potentially bring a campground to the Tournament Capital Ranch.
