A report by the BC Coroner’s Service into the death of a Kamloops woman in Wells Grey Provincial Park last summer deemed her death to be accidental.
According to the report filed by coroner Andrew Cave, on June 13 the 21-year-old fell from Spahats Falls in the provincial park, just north of Clearwater.
Sources have identified the victim as Moraya Harrison.
The report from Cave says the victim was under the influence of alcohol, cocaine, and meth when she fell, which were contributing factors.
The woman was at a cliff with three friends when she jumped onto the lap of one friend, and both toppled backward over the cliff. Her friend was able to grab onto branches, but she fell more than 120 metres and died from her fall.
Cave’s report makes no recommendations going forward based on the accidental nature of the death.
Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell is also contracted to manage that area of Wells Grey park.
“We checked the safety fences there,” he noted. “We’re up there on a daily basis looking at things, so we were fairly confident that this wasn’t a failure on part of the system.”
“Sometimes things happen, and unfortunately this is one of them. My heart goes out to the family.”
