The Tournament Capital Centre is under pressure due to changing times according to the City of Kamloops.
Director of Community Services Byron McCorkell says the original TCC concept was to serve athletes, competition, and the Tournament Capital theme of the city.
That is no longer the case.
“There is a whole bunch of residential that is going in there,” McCorkell said. “When the building was built that was not there. There are upwards of a thousand beds being proposed. That building [TCC] becomes their neighbourhood gym.”
“So we are talking to TRU about how that neighbourhood centre might look for those residents in that area.”
He says changes are being discussed including adding a warm-up tank for the pool, and a new facility between the pool and field house.
“There is a little plaza between there and we have talked about adding to that a two story facility that would allow for an expansion of our fitness opportunities,” McCorkell added. “Move the building around a little bit and address some of our population into in there as far as the way people come and go.”
Another potential project is a new entrance along the back of the pool allowing people to go right into the bleachers instead of going through the middle of swimmers.
