A good turnout this week at a meeting to talk about secondary suites in the City of Kamloops.
Parking on residential streets was identified as one of the biggest concerns by many of the roughly 100 people present.
But Kamloops Councillor Sadie Hunter says parking wasn’t the only hot button topic.
“Things like how this policy might roll out and how it might go forward,” she said. “I think that’s what city staff are trying to determine is what would work the best for residents and what would be a good incentive for people to enroll in the program.”
“We’re looking at different residents, we’re looking to residents for input on how to move forward on something like this.”
Hunter added that the move should not be seen as a crackdown, but rather the city trying to figure out how to offer more, safe rental options for residents.
“I mean there are a lot of suites in the city, but many of them are what would be termed non-conforming, meaning that they might not meet all of the building code requirements necessarily,” he said.
“This was a way to address that piece of it, but also to address our low vacancy rate and overall housing affordability and housing options for residents.”
Once this community engagement is done, the information will go before City Council for their input likely in March or April.
