Officials in Logan Lake are cautiously optimistic they’ll avoid another total fish kill this winter.
Some 3,000 fish were put into the lake last summer, which is still trying to rebound from last winter when the oxygenator failed.
CAO Randy Lambright says recent oxygen readings from the lake are positive.
“Looked like with ice fishing, folks were still pulling fish out of the lake, so that’s good,” he said. “Things are lining up not too bad for us this year.”
“Again, cautiously optimistic, we still have a fair bit of winter to go, but all things being equal we hope to be able to make it through.”
He thinks the milder winter this year could be helping, but they’ll be keeping an eye on things due to the recent cold snap.
“Definitely less snow, but it’s certainly cold right at the moment, so that will definitely thicken up the ice,” he added. “I think one of the biggest things is the oxygenator is a key part of keeping things alive in the lake.”
“That’s a huge component to ensuring that we don’t end up with winter kill this year.”
Along with the oxygenator failing, Lambright says the early onset of ice on the lake and the excess amount of snow caused a perfect trifecta of issues that led to the winter kill last year.
