A rough January for Movie Mart in downtown Kamloops.
After being robbed twice, the store on St. Paul Street was inspected by WorkSafeBC which found eight safety violations. Storeowner and city councillor Denis Walsh says most were able to be quickly addressed.
He says many of violations like not having a CSA-approved ladder or a first aid kit have already been addressed.
“We were already in the process of changing some of the procedures in the store. It’s just that with five employees, I talk to them all personally. So we didn’t have it written down, and WorkSafe wants to see things written down.”
Walsh’s store and two other small businesses in the downtown were robbed last month. The most recent theft was nearly two weeks ago, which Walsh says is a positive sign.
“I think the RCMP have somehow gotten a handle on this. Which is good news for small business owners.”
Walsh says the most surprising violation in his store was not having a written policy for checking in on employees working alone.
