With their best ever year in the books, the Kamloops Airport is hoping to keep expanding and process more passengers and flights in the future.
Those plans factored into recent contract negotiations with non-airline airport employees.
Barry Tchir with the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees says they’re preparing for any expansions.
“Once that happens, they’re going to need more bodies to respond and maintain better,” he said. “That was part of this agreement.”
In the immediate future, two more positions – an airport technician and a groundskeeper – will be added as part of the negotiated contract signed last week.
However, Tchir adds that could mean more than two new people working at YKA.
“I don’t know how many people they will be hiring in each position,” he said. “I would imagine there might be more than one person in those particular positions.”
“That’s up to them depending on their ability to maintain the building.”
Tchir notes they’ll be monitoring the situation to make sure they have the proper amount of staff.
